Fort Point is a part of the Golden Gate Recreational Area, and is located underneath the Golden Gate Bridge. Construction began in 1953. The fort was occupied throughout the Civil War, and basically became obsolete by the end of the war due to advances in weapons of war. When the Golden Gate Bridge was designed, it was modified to include preservation of the fort.
