Tower of Jewels Blooms

4-19-02. Thanks to Cynthia from the Garden Web's forums, this volunteer plant (from our neighbors yard) has been identified as a Echium wildpreti or "Tower of Jewels". It can grow to over 6 feet tall, and it has a mass of blooms up its spine. This year we have two, the tall one shown here, and the other (much shorter one) which we have fondly been referring to as "stubby". Be sure to look at all of the close-up shots because some of the shots make it look like something out of a science fiction movie.
